7 Safety Rules Every Farmer Must Follow While Spraying

Crop protection products help farmers get a healthy harvest, but they must be handled with care. A few simple habits can protect your health, your family and the environment. Follow these 7 safety rules every time you spray.

1. Read the label before use

The label and leaflet tell you the correct dose, the crops it is meant for, and the safety precautions. Never guess the dose.

2. Wear protective clothing

Wear full-sleeve clothes, gloves, a mask, goggles and shoes. Cover your body completely so the spray does not touch your skin or eyes.

3. Mix carefully

Mix the product in the open air, away from children and animals. Use a stick to mix, never your bare hands.

4. Spray in the right direction

Always spray in the direction of the wind, never against it. Avoid spraying during strong wind or hot afternoon hours.

5. Do not eat, drink or smoke while spraying

Wash your hands and face with soap and clean water before eating, drinking or smoking.

6. Clean up after spraying

Wash the sprayer, your clothes and yourself after the work is done. Do not wash the sprayer in ponds, wells or canals.

7. Store and dispose of safely

• Keep products in their original packs, in a locked place away from food and children.
• Never reuse empty containers for food or water.
• Dispose of empty containers as instructed on the label.
