Why Micro Nutrients Matter for Higher Crop Yield

Most farmers apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potash to their fields. But plants also need small amounts of other nutrients like zinc, boron, iron, calcium and magnesium. These are called micro and secondary nutrients, and they play a big role in crop health and yield.

What do micro nutrients do?

  • Zinc helps in healthy leaf growth and better tillering.
  • Boron supports flowering, pollination and fruit setting.
  • Calcium makes cell walls strong and improves fruit quality.
  • Iron and magnesium help leaves stay green and make food for the plant.

Signs of shortage

When a crop does not get enough micro nutrients, you may see yellow or pale leaves, small leaves, poor flowering, flower or fruit drop, or cracked fruits. These signs can look like disease, so a soil test is the best way to be sure.

How to give micro nutrients

Micro nutrients can be given through the soil or as a foliar spray, depending on the product and crop. Foliar sprays work fast when the plant shows signs of shortage. Always follow the dose given on the label.

Balanced nutrition means better harvest

A crop is only as strong as its weakest nutrient. Giving the right micro nutrients at the right stage helps plants grow evenly, flower better and give a higher, better-quality yield.

Always read the product label and leaflet carefully before use, and follow the recommended dose. For crop-specific advice, contact the GeneTech team.
